Setting Goals for Book Writing (Step 4)

Goal Setting for Authors

goal setting for authors

Now the fun begins!

How do you set goals that are doable, yet ambitious?

If you’re anything like most folks who are now (or want to be) published authors, then you’ll quickly realize that setting goals is the easy part…the implementation part? Not so much.

Unless you have a plan!

Think about it – why do so many people have “writing a book” on their bucket list – and yet so few ever get to that point?

Typically, the “reasons” fall into a few primary categories:

  1. It’s all too overwhelming.
  2. I don’t know how to edit and I’m not that great of a writer.
  3. I have no idea how to publish and it would take me years to learn!
  4. I’m too busy with my “real” life to take the time to write a book.
  5. I’ll put it off for some future time in life where I have more time.

So, which of these reasons resonate with you?

The truth is, so many of us never get past “first base” because we talk ourselves out of it before every making a plan!

You just need to do what you did in Step 1 – make a quality decision that you WILL write a book – and you will get the help you need to make a plan and get it done!

You see, there are answers to every conceivable reason (excuse) that your brain may try to throw at you.

There are people you can hire to do those things that you may not be the best at doing (i.e. editing, graphic design, publishing, etc.).

And it is not as hard as you might think!

So here’s what to do.

  1. Look at your current level of commitments and decide how much time you can take each day (5 days per week? Once a week?) to sit down and write. Even if you feel you can spare only 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week – that is a great start!

      2. Set a target date (notice – not a “deadline”) for when you would like to have the first draft of your manuscript completed. Don’t worry if you feel like you are “guessing” at this point – you can reassess in 2 weeks and move your target date, if you want to.

      3. Stick to your goals – even if life gets in the way- shoot to get in your target number of minutes each week and watch your progress soar!

We’ll pick up your next actions in the next post – meanwhile, enjoy your writing!
